Gateway Academy Fundraising Movie Screening - The Star

THE STAR: A "Pay-As-You-Wish" Fundraising Movie

This December, Gateway is proud to present THE STAR, an animated film about the Christmas Nativity story unlike any you’ve seen before.
In Sony Pictures Animation's The Star, a small but brave donkey named Bo yearns for a life beyond his daily grind at the village mill. One day he finds the courage to break free, and finally goes on the adventure of his dreams. On his journey, he teams up with Ruth, a loveable sheep who has lost her flock and Dave, a dove with lofty aspirations. Along with three wisecracking camels and some eccentric stable animals, Bo and his new friends follow the Star and become accidental heroes in the greatest story ever told - the first Christmas.

This ‘Pay-as-you-wish’ movie event will help to raise funds for Gateway Academy’s Inclusive Arts Drama Programme for Adults with Special Needs. In 2019, Gateway Aademy will officially launch the programme, which uses drama to teach participants soft skills to improve their communication, such as articulation, speaking with confidence, and using the right body language.

Gateway Academy thanks all attendees for their generosity.

About Gateway's Inclusive Arts Drama Programme:
Gateway believes that everyone should have opportunity to enjoy and engage in the arts, and that the arts enrich our lives.

With this belief, Gateway Academy has been working together with Act 3 Theatrics to run a pilot 10-session Drama program for adults with intellectual disabilities in 2018.

For people past the age of 18 in the special education system, there is a glaring gap and lack of opportunities beyond graduation. There are limited places for continued training and especially, enrichment for these people. This drama programme was initiated to help further the learning and development of this community, and hopefully add to the further quality and fullness of their lives.

The participants in our Gateway Academy programme engage in drama techniques such as movement, music, games and role playing to help develop communication skills beyond their daily needs, such as articulation, understanding body language, interpersonal skills and self-confidence. Within a few weeks, we observed that participants have demonstrated improvements such as more expressiveness in their communication and more speaking from usually non-verbal participants. Thus, we believe this program has the potential to help participants' personal development greatly, with a long-term view towards employability and integration in society.

In 2019, Gateway Academy aims to run a long-term programme on a weekly basis, reach more beneficiaries, and achieve greater impact on the beneficiaries.
